Carl Sagan.
What a guy.

Kinda sounds like Kermit

Looks miserable and onshore for the next while.

Here’s one from when it wasn’t.

Monotone

Posted October 27th, 2009 by Paudie 2 Comments

It’s weird that black and white photos are considered monotone.
Surely there’s two tones there?

Anyway, cloudy rainy weather leads to high ISO which on my camera looks very bad in colour.

Probably not worth the drive up from Cork, especially considering my car broke down on the way home. Had to wait two hours for a tow truck (managed to get all my lenses and the sensor on my camera cleaned though).

Well actually, I just stopped the car when a really loud grinding noise started in the engine.

She’s currently at the garage. The timing belt slipped half off and was eating through the plastic covering. No word on how much or how long to fix.

Hugo serious backdoor. Who needs a ski.

Empty to finish the day.

It was pretty inconsistent, so I grabbed a sponge for the first time since I was about ten I reckon.

It’s hard.

Looking down over the ledge is a hell of a lot different to looking up it with the camera.
I wussed out of the bigger ones but squeezed into one smaller barrel.

Fun times.

So I have been playing with a video camera for the past two weeks and managed to get some clips together.

Hopefully you like. Feedback appreciated.

Hope everyone’s been getting something over the past week or so. Been a few nice sessions round these parts.

I’ve been shooting video rather than stills (thank you Mick), so it’s going to be longer than normal before stuff gets posted.

Here’s one from a while back, drop in is nothing special, but check out the board on the left. Funny.

Andy has been keeping busy. How long are those rights?

Hey there sports fans.

New mag from the opposite side of the world just been launched.

It’s an audio-visual treat for all you crazy cats that actually takes advantage of being an online magazine.

Be warned though, it’s fairly intense so I’d recommend closing all other programs before having a look. It’s worth it though.

Stop The Motion

All Day Session

They only really happen during summer, you can’t really call one longish session while it’s bright in winter an all day session.

It has to be ten hours plus of light to be an all day session.

The best part of those days, for me, is the drive home at night. When it’s just warm enough (or your still on an adrenaline kick) and you open the window to the pitch black country side.

Maybe meeting a few tractors with massive spotlights, making the most of the dry weather to do whatever it is they do on dry days (cut hay?). Maybe kill your own lights and drive by moonlight if you’re silly enough.

The air rushing by the window and blowing anything loose around the car.

Head still exploding with all you’ve seen today.

For once completely satisfied with surfing and already planning the next session.

Content.

But then the adrenaline wears off, you realise all you’ve eaten today was an apple in the morning, and maybe some wedges or a roll if you thought of it. Hopefully you got some unsalted water as well.

You start to drift off.

We’ve all done it.

It’s stupid, but you convince yourself you’ll be better off just getting home and then sleeping. No point stopping o nthe side of the road.

You’ll be grand.

Ok, find some good music. Something you can sing along to normally does the trick.

But one night Herbie ( my sentient mp3 player) decided to surprise me and picked a track I hadn’t heard before.

So this is a thank you to Herbie and Moby.

You saved my life.

Them Birds, them birds, they all love me

And no for something completely similar.

Except not really. It is different.
Birds in flight. BIF for those in the know apparently.

Mad feckin’ gulls
_MG_9154

I want to start shooting fashion photography, not just girls in clothes, but mad feckin scenery and controllable lighting. Something a little creative.

I want to make more movies

I want a 7D.

That’s not happening anytime soon.

Does anyone know how to make rainbows POP that little bit extra?

Barrel Bonanza

Posted October 7th, 2009 by Paudie No Comments

Ok well not really a bonanza, but there were some barrels.

_MG_9337

It took a while to get there but some waves were had last Sunday. I’m not sure what I expected really, but it was mostly sunny, with good winds and a bit of swell, and that sounds like a pretty good day to me.
Most of my trips recently I’ve gone expecting absolute perfection, and, as usual, have been disappointed.

This time I just cruised up, I didn’t even speed, that much. I’d only been to this spot once before so maybe that’s why I didn’t have many expectations. Which was good because it looked awful. Everybody was sitting around wondering why the hell it was so crap. Around the corner the swell was booming, but in this little bay it just wasn’t quite doing it.

“Maybe it’s the tide”

“No it needs more wind to hold it up”

“Hang on let’s just see what this set does”

_MG_9291

A lot of excuses were made everybody was itching to get wet, and it was a couple of groms who eventually got my hyped up enough to jump in. Unfortunately, one of them snapped his board straight away and I didn’t get to hook up with the other on any decent ones. Although the kid with the snapped board got his pieces together dropped them back to the van then went bodysurfing for about an hour, getting more barrels than anyone.
Find the stoke where you can.

Barry slotted, who cares about the close out.

Everybody Video Now

Posted October 5th, 2009 by Paudie 3 Comments

Well the new Canon 7D is in shops now, I had a play with one at the weekend in a shop in Dublin. A good bit heavier than my 20D, obviously the screen is massive compared to mine. The burst mode is amazingly fast, felt like throwing my 20D on the ground when I shot with it yesterday it was so slow in comparison. AF looks to be nice and fast, although I didn’t have time to try out the millions of different focusing settings. Had a quick play with the video but hard to tell really what it’s like when just viewing on the camera screen. Still looks likely to be my next purchase.

Although Check this shit out, new GoPro HD, I had said I wouldn’t bother with one again (seeing as they don’t float) but this footage looks pretty amazing.
