Stab mag have had a pretty cool thing running for a few months called Little Weeds. They’ve invited people to submit work/themselves in a competition for various prizes. They’ve five categories {Surfer, Photographer, Film-maker, Model and Writer}. People have been submitting their work for the past few months and recently Stab brought the three from each category to Sydney to work with the Mentors (people already established in their respective industry) in the final.
The prizes vary according to the category but the winning surfer gets a years contract with Billabong, which is pretty sweet. What I think is so awesome is that it’s given young aussies a platform to collaborate and get feedback, which is really helpful when you’re first trying to sharpen your skills.
I’ve been watching it for a while now and the level of talent is unbelievable. I’m most impressed though with Chase Burns, he’s one of the filmmakers and his stuff has just blown me away. Below is his edit of the two final days in Sydney and I reckon he definitely deserves to win his category.
Go check out the Little Weeds site anyway the writers are really good as well. Two of them are girls which brings a really refreshing view point to the standard “We went to this island got hammered/puked/surfed” that seems to be standard fair in a lot of mags. Also the photogs have got their shizz down, especaiily Trent Mitchell and Duncan McFarlane
